Belong Puti

The Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) caps its 39th theater season with “Belong Puti,” a play originally from Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero’s “The Woman With A White Veil,” adapted from Ony de Leon’s Filipino translation.

"Belong Puti" is the story of Rondolf Mauricio, an artistically and spiritually bankrupt playwright.

Rondolf stages the scene in his mind, taking the audience with him from his deathbed to the Mauricio’s mansion where an impending rain is about to ruin the party taking place in honor of Annella Mauricio.

A matron in her 50s, she arrives with a white veil on her face which she takes off to reveal the face of a woman in her early 20s.

She also reveals a selfish woman who sends her aging husband to another room, alienates all her friends with her cruel comments, flirts with her daughter’s boyfriend and badmouths everyone else including her own mother.

The play takes a strange twist as Rondolf, stung by his wife’s cruelty, exacts revenge on her flawed heroine by turning the playwright into a transvestite hell-bent on aping, and taking on the role of Annella.

"Belong Puti" features Mario O’Hara, CB Garrucho, Lou Veloso, Sherry Lara, Vicenta Ello-Alaban, Sherlyn Mae Cuare, Upeng Galang-Fernandez, Joan Orendain, Miles Pasamanero, Carme Sanchez and Sonia Valenciano.

Production design is by National Artist Salvador Bernal, lighting design by Shoko Matsumoto and music design by Dodjie Fernandez. Nonon Padilla directs.

The play will run on Feb. 9, 16, 23 and March 2, at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; and on Feb. 10, 11, 17, 18, 24, 25, March 3, and 4, at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., at the PETA Theater Center located at 5 Sunnyside Dr., New Manila, Q.C. (behind the QC Sports Club along E. Rodriguez Ave.).
